Prypiat:Abandoned city
Prypiat (Ukrainian): or Pripyat, is an abandoned city in the zone of alienation in
northern Ukraine, Kiev Oblast, near the border with Belarus. It was home to the Chernobyl
Nuclear Power Plant workers. The city was abandoned in 1986 following the Chernobyl
disaster. Its population had been around 50,000 prior to the accident.
In 1926 construction began on the Baker Hotel, which would offer therapeutic baths and massages to the many visitors. Built in the style of the Arlington Hotel in Hot Springs, Arkansas, the Baker is not quite Art Deco, but still a product of the Roaring 20s. Forgotten places
Dark Days is a documentary made by Marc Singer, a British filmmaker. The film follows a group of people living in an abandoned section of the New York City underground railway system, more precisely the area of the so called Freedom Tunnel. When he relocated from London to Manhattan, Marc Singer was struck by the number of homeless people he had seen throughout the city. Singer had befriended a good number of New York's homeless and later, after hearing of people living underground in abandoned tunnel systems, he met and became close to a group of people living in The Freedom Tunnel community stretching north from Penn Station past Harlem. An abandoned structure is any man made object that is no longer in use. Structures that could fall into this definition include buildings, bridges, bunkers, tunnels, drains, mines, water towers, railroad tracks, farms, wells, or houses. An Urban Explorer might explore such a structure in an urban setting, but the term Urban Explorer is poorly defined and often not frequently representative of a person exploring a structure. Here are some easy steps to recognize, enter, and get away with when exploring abandoned structures.
How to Explore Abandoned
Structures
Freedom Tunnel
The Freedom Tunnel is the name given by urban explorers, graffiti artists, and homeless people to the Amtrak tunnel under Riverside Park in Manhattan, New York City. It is also the name of the legendary and constantly evolving graffiti pieces that cover the tunnel walls.
The Freedom Tunnel got its name because the graffiti artist Chris "Freedom" Pape used the tunnel walls to create some of his most notable artwork.
The name may also be a reference to the freedom one may find in this tunnel, the freedom to live unobserved, the freedom to create artwork, and freedom from rent.
Dark Days (documentary)
Craning is a form of urban exploration which specifically involves the scaling of cranes, guyed masts or other similar structures. The word "craning " is sometimes spelled "krayning" to overcome phonetic misinterpretations.
